Angle Grinders: Corded vs Cordless vs pneumatic

I was actually thinking the same thing for my cordless grinders. They are 4.5" and spin at a typical 8,500 RPMs (for cordless grinders it's typical), but 4.5" discs are usually rated 12,000 - 13,300 RPMs. No way to easily make the motor spin faster, so I'm contemplating how to make some new guards to use some 5", 6", and certain 7" abrasives. I'll get much faster surface speed at the edge as if the motor was spinning faster, but it will be due to a larger diameter disc spinning within it's limits, due to the slower speed motor. 5" are usually rated 12,000 RPMs, 6" usually 10,000 RPMs, and 7" usually 8500 RPMs.

Yes there is. It is something you need to "doo"

Under User CP, go to 'Edit ignore list'

All the witty banter reminded me that I do have the old B&D 9" dual voltage unit as well. Might as well weigh 100#. I can't use/hold it any more. That booger could do some serious work plugged into the big outlet. Full PPE and someone standing next to you as a spotter was helpful.

Thereby swinging the brush hog straight up on the lower arms.

And then I simply walked up to blades, and proceeded to grind them nice and sharp.....

I do the same,well to tell the truth we don't sharpen blades,the sand eats them up,but we do change them often,the same way.

I gave up the big grinders a long time ago,i had one get away and it got tangled in my shirt sleave,that thing pulled my shirt off in a nano second and gave me some road rash on one arm,i was lucky.
No more big grinders (but like i said,i have 2 7'' sanders/polishers,low speed stuff.
Hell,i can't hardy use them now.

I've got a few:

-5" dewalt corded
-9" dewalt corded
-5" flexvolt dewalt cordless
-princess auto 9" polisher (can take angle grinder blades but I leave a heavy steel brush on it)

I've noticed that corded tools still put out significantly more power.

Cordless are amazing just for convenience.. certain jobs you need cordless.

It's nice having multiple so you don't have to constantly swap wheels.

I do have a pneumatic one but never tried it. Too much setup required. It takes the small, almost dremel sized disks.

Thanks again for the pertinent replies. Just like clamps, I feel one can not have too many grinders with each suited for a different job.

I do enjoy the convenience of my cordless grinders, but then at the same time, my cheapie corded grinders (Ryobi's) can still get the job done because I typically use quality abrasives (3M Cubitron II, Dewalt Ceramic), and then I absolutely love the power-to-weight ratio of my pneumatic grinders. The 7" air grinders obviously don't have a great power-to-weight ratio as I can't use them 1-handed, so I typically don't use them all that much, so I end up reaching for my other pneumatic grinders (and other tools). I honestly have too many pneumatics, but hey, it ain't hurting anyone, so why not. I've yet to see Chris's collection, but I'd be willing to bet a $3 bill mine is probably more extensive

I just picked up two more tonight. Offered $10 for two black and deckers, 3.5”. I left the big 7” one at the sale. I did buy the 7” wheels that they had though. I have two big grinders already.

I’m trying to get half as many of Chris’s collection.

For what’s it’s worth, I had a 3M salesman stop in at shop one time and talk to my boss about how good the cubitrons were. But he said you do need a powerful grinder to properly put the hp to the wheels so they will break and self sharpen the grit on them. Most cheap grinders do not have the power. I think he recommended at least a 7 amp grinder.

Thinking back, that salesman visit cost me my job there. Glad I was able to finally move on to greener pastures.
