![]() Last fall we had the area behind our existing shop excavated and this spring I ordered a 30x48 pole barn kit from a local supplier. After a lovely 3 month wait from the county, we received our permits and started work. The first task was modifying the excavation work from last year. The kit showed up a few days before and was thankfully complete. Next up, we rented and put in the 4'6" deep, 24" round holes + 6" of concrete in the bottoms. Two weeks ago the footings were inspected and passed- with one acceptation, a note was added to verify the set backs. I taped everything back out and we went ahead and put up the posts and started leveling/squaring/backfilling everything. Things have been going slow, but ok- that was until yesterday. Yesterday I ran into my neighbor (on the north side of the new shop) and we got to talking. He owns a excavation company and I figured I would ask him about our corner marker, as we could not find it when I had originally laid the building out. So we got looking and with a bit of digging, we found it and I just about went pale white. I was 15ft over the road facing 30ft setback. This is, without a doubt- 100% my fault. When the original excavation was done, I measured everything out using the edge of road/edge of the neighbors fence + 5-10ft for good measure. I had intended to find the corner marker and adjust, but completely forgot. These 70 hour work weeks are getting to me. Anyways, the plot plan and drawings were all based on this layout- and approved. I am not sure quite what to do. The posts are up and backfilled, the next inspection is for concrete, and my neighbors advice was just to cover the corner marker back up and if they ask, I know nothing and the plot plan was approved. Doing some reading, I can apply for a variance for $900 with no guarantee I won't have to rip everything out. If I do have to change/move the building, I would need a retaining wall, new drawings, and to move the doors to the road facing end. At this point, I am not sure what to do. I'm a weekend's work away from needing concrete. Should I listen to my neighbor? Or should I call the county tomorrow? I'm definitely learning a hard lesson here and I would hate to have this be set back any more. I am assuming if a inspector saw this, I would get a stop work order and have to apply for the variance.

I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Are you supposed to have a 30' setback from the edge of the road allowance, and you have only 15', or....... ![]() I would appreciate a little clarification here please.

Note was added to verify setbacks. I think you have your answer, either apply for variance or shift back 15'. Looks like you can just add post holes to the back side and remove from front if I am seeing it properly.

I wish I could just move them back. There's a 6ft change in grade over ~12ft (the width of one post being moved). This would also put one bay door smack in the middle of the accessory building (well tower) and make it un-usable.

I sure am glad we have no building inspections here. Makes construction easy and changes easy too.
