Default Tooling Protection Sleeves

I recently picked up a bunch of loose tooling and want to keep the cutting edges from getting damaged. I looked at mesh tubing, but the heavy duty options have a very limited amount of stretch so I would have to order a number of different sizes.

I found light duty mesh on Ebay. It is sold pre-cut as Cosmetic Brush Protectors. At less than $0.06 per tube, I ordered (2x) 50 packs.

While it is light duty, it does stretch enough to fit a 9/32”chucking reamer all the way up to a 1-1/2” end mill. The mesh strands are about 0.013" diameter.

For those of you looking for an inexpensive way to protect your tooling and don’t want to invest in a hot pot and peel-away coatings, this may fit your needs.

I also found that if you cut them at an angle, they are easier to start on to the tool.

Nice, Thank You for the post.
Looks like they will work for my larger drill bits so they don't knock around in a box.

That would work for my files. Thanks.

The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

That's the same stuff we buy on a 1000ft roll for packaging garlic.

Of course, I seem to have forgot where I got it from, it was either Alibaba, who still have it, or ebay, where I can't find the rolls

Lew, if you trust Amazon more than FleaBay, I use the 1-1/2" size of this

Haven't tried it for tool protection, but the 1-1/2" size (think "chinese finger puller") goes large enough to fit over the connectors on my 30A spool gun and the 20' plasma torch, then a few "smoothing pulls" working from one end to the other takes out the "granny stockings" effect

To minimize fraying, it's better to use a hot knife for cutting shorter pieces off - I found one that replaces the tip on a soldering gun

HTH... Steve
