Here's a 2-53 in a1960 John Deere 440 for your listening pleasure. Apparently John Deere didn't have a small diesel at the time so they bought Detroits. Cylinder block is a custom casting with the blower on the right side for chassis clearance and no air box covers. Rear accessory drive case is specific to the John Deere too.

I still have the dozer, but the "Old Homesteader" was claimed by cancer about 1 1/2 years ago. He made it to 6 weeks from his 101st birthday, so he got a lot of road behind him.

Your dad was one of the most amazing men I ever heard of, Gene.

Thanks Rod, I guess it's all relative. He used to tell about the guys that were around when he was a kid, according to him, "Those were some real men."

It seems no one watched the follow up video after that old Detroit was blown.

It was torn down and the guts inspected. There was significant existing internal damage to the engine well before it was blown up, and the cost of rebuilding it would have been well more than what the engine was worth.

Add to that the fact that particular engine, and IIRC, two or three others like it had been on the market for about 6 months at the scrap yard deBoss got it from, with zero interest in any of them, so it was going to be shredded and recycled in any case.

I usually don't see any point in deliberately blowing up any engine myself, but if it is going to be shredded any how, why not have a bit of fun with it.

Same idea when I was working installing natural gas lines; always had to be careful not to damage any property, but when I got a chance to take a cat and knock down some trees to clear a right of way, it felt good to be able to get shed of any destructive tendencies in a manner that hurt no one and was at the same time useful.
