Question for Ron- Shade Tree
I just ordered 2- 5 gallon pails of oil to change our lathes gear boxes at work. I noticed there was quite a bit of dust on top of the pails, so I figured it is not a fast moving item for my warehouse. The production date (trace code) looks to be 11-03-2021. I am assuming this is the production date, but I have not verified this with the salesman yet. My question is, should I worry about the age of this oil. Does it have a shelf life? If I was running it in my old worn out machines at home, I would not worry. But running it in our $50,000 new replacement cost machines at work, that we depend on daily, it has me slightly concerned. I remember a past thread where you mentioned oil has a shelf life. I can’t remember if it was oil in general, or oil for automotive engines with special additives. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

not qualified to answer- but interested to see what the answer is.....a 55 gal. drum of that product is like $1,250.00.....yowza

Question for Ron- Shade Tree
I asked the salesman today about it. He said, “ company answer, yes oil has a shelf life “. He didn’t tell me what it was, though. He did say I would have no problem using what he sold us though.
Off the record, he said oil is really good for a long time, and I probably would never notice any problems as long as the specs of the oil matched the application. ( at least that’s what I took from the conversation). Don’t take an oil that was produced 30 years ago and put it in your 2023 car. It probably will not end well. But you can put new oil into old machines more easily. I’m sure Ron will be by shortly to set me straight. Was my salesman just trying to save his company money from me expecting oil not to be almost 2 years old when I get it? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I would not worry about the age, generally industrial lubes are 5 year shelf life.
Run with it, you're good. Citgo is a good choice, here. Water soluble cutting fluids, generally a 1 year shelf life.
