Order your Acme screw then machine the collar ,press and silver solder . That is how we always replaced ball screws on our CNC vertical lathes .We kept the ball screw raw in stock . 5-6 hours later back making chips .

Some of the old vises had square threads.

If the Acme threaded screw will go in, go for it! The vise don't care. I'm sure the old square thread form has formed into something between square and Acme by now.

Now, if you want to chase the thread in the vise body into a uniform thread and make a screw to match it, go for it!

My thought was to machine it from one piece. Reason being I know a little lathe work but I've never cut threads before. Ever. Also why I looked at going with 12L14 because it would be easier to machine and cut Acme threads for a noob.

1144 stress-proof is another option for a vice screw.
