Default Strangest bearing squall ever

04,Ford F250 Super duty, 5.4l gas auto 4x4 389k moles
I have had a awful squall at certain rpm in all gears and on start up for the last week in this truck. It has gotten slightly worse. Truly sounds like a pissed off house cat.
So ,fearing a tranny or a transfer case,in the shop the old gal came this morning.. After pressing u-joints in a winch pto.shaft for a customer. Did the old feel and listen trick and it seemed to be coming from the cat. Converter. After lunch and a nap,it is Sunday you know, I cut the exhaust pipe in front of the converter, jacked the thing out of the way and lit the fire..
Guess what? No squalls. Noisy as hell but the cat was let out of it. Tacked the converter back on,just to be sure and cat was back.
Oh boy new converter time. Anyone had any luck replacing the factory one with a Walker Universal? Have to reprogram the ECM?

Digr thinks like I do If the cat is like older Fords it's like a ceramic honeycomb coated with the catalyst. You can take a pipe or bar and smash it. Dump it out the end and put the empty shell back on.

No checks here, state even did away with the old safety inspection years ago. Just a little concerned that removal of it will cause the ECM to go nuts and have to be reprogrammed. Think today I'll see what's available salvage.

Ut oh,not going to be one from a salvage.
EPA will hang them if they sell one except for recycling.
Guess she'll get a good sized universal and I'll deal with the ECM if I have to.
