Yep! I (and a whole group of volunteers) worked on various projects for BLM and other organizations of like for years so it'll always be Bureau of Land Management to me .

The saga goes on. Yesterday the tip broke off the wood splitter cone. Since I have to do a repair, I remembered Keith gave me a new cone he had sitting on the shelf for 20 years. Turns out it is a left hand thread where mine is a right hand thread. That works out real well since using the new cone lets me run the old truck tranny in forward gears instead of reverse. More options on rpm's that way.

So now to get the old cone off and the broken tip out of the log to see if it can be repaired, in case of a need for future use.

Is that tip replaceable? On the new cone, the tip looks like it might be screwed in. It has a different color to me. Maybe the old one broke off at the threads?

It does screw on and is also pinned with what looks like a roll pin. Looks like it broke off right at the threads. The new one also has a screw on tip. The roll pin does not drive out and it must be hardened as a drill will not work either. I got the old tip out of the log using a wood chisel and hammer. Took 1 1/2 hours. This cottonwood is some hardassed stringy wood.

I also used a 1/16"x6" cut off wheel and ground out the weld at the back of the collar behind the cone. Used a chisel after I saw blue at the bottom of the cut indicating each of the splines. It did separate with a small crack. It would not budge using a 4 lb sledge and drift. The collar also has three 1/2" spot welds, so expect it is also welded to a female 10 spline sleeve under the collar.

At this point, since I want to use the new cone to get the right rotation to use the forward tranny gears, I will likely wash off the collar and sleeve with a torch to get down to the splined axle shaft. I will get a new female 10 splined sleeve and mate to the new cone.

The splined shaft measures 1.375". So likely a 1 ton truck axle shaft. Next to find a 1 3/8" female 10 spline slip joint, like used on a drive line shaft, to use as a collar to weld to the cone back plate.
