Default Davis Taskforce 200

So I picked this non working Davis taskforce 200..

I always wanted a mini dozer and the price of 950.00 seemed reasonable.

the guy swore he had it running few years back..

Well not knowing anything about them and without knowing ahead of time parts availability and such I figured that it's mainly a fabricated unit, that I could fix what was wrong vs having to buy factory parts..

It's a single cylinder Wisconsin 12.5HP with electric start.

The drive unit is a Funk.. The unit is hydraulically driven and has a low and high range.

It's also dual control.. Meaning from the ground walking behind it or from the seat which can also be from 2 positions forwards and backwards..

So the first thing was to figure out why it was not running.. Pulled the carb and it looked like brand new inside.

I had to forge new pins for the pusher assembly and blade.. Cut off the crap the previous owner had welded on..

I'm not sure why people do what they do with no real thought.

the drive axle is an old style arrangement with interlocking knuckles.

Upon further investigation I discovered the drive line and sprockets for the chain were completely used up..

When the dozer was asked to go forwards it would cam on the tracks drive teeth..

At this point I was thinking I'm stuck.. There has to be a way that I can modify the end drive sprockets..

Even in it's broken state it was still a force to be..

We had a snow that turned into 3" thick ice.. the Kubota b6000 fel could do nothing..

This little dozer on the other hand just tore it right off the ground..

After the ice storm..

It was time to find out why the machine was not working correctly.

It was worse than expected..

But I also learned the items were semi steel and/or cast steel so were weldable.

With careful tig welding I was able to weld the teeth of the couplings and bring back to shape.

I also reached out to a brake lining company and the person I spoke with was happy enough to point me in the right direction on fixing the brakes on the machine..

He told me the materials to get and to epoxy the material to the backing.. And then rivet it.

In my quest for information I did find a company called Ballintine that made parts for the trenchers..

The 200 being old, the model 300 it's replacement.. The 200 and 300 share the same frame with just a different drive and motor.

So, I ordered some drive sprockets in a search for how to fix the drives before finding out they could be welded..

I ordered the correct seals and bearings..

I then took it all apart and cleaned it, checked wear surfaces and etc.

The middle shaft was originally filled with oil.. I decided that because of it's inherit weakness and because there was no oil in it that grease would be a better choice..

The way this works is this..

The middle shaft has a bolt at each end that is locked in position.. The middle shaft does not rotate..

The outside items, the sprockets, the cam plates, springs, etc, etc move on bearings on top of this middle shaft..

When the lever is pulled it disengages the cam/knuckles and allows for the ends to slip.. This outside part is simply disengaged..

Since the splines/knuckles are engaged with the drive section or middle outside tube it transmits power thru the knuckles to the outside sprockets..

Really a very simple system.. Problem is the inside shaft that everything runs on is only about 1" diameter.. So when power is applied the whole shaft deflects and the drive will jump a tooth..

If this system had a middle bearing to support the shaft I can see it would be super durable and simple..

Also jumping up the size in shaft, over tube, knuckles would also allow for an easy increase in HP for the drive..

Davis went to the more modern fully enclosed drive instead as used on the 300..

Once i got it all back together, there was not enough adjustment distance so had to find half links.. I was going to make my own and found the drive chain is a standard size.. But by accident I reached out to Ballintine and they had 1/2 links for 81.00 each.. So no brainer..

Took it all apart again.. I also changed the middle shaft over to grease at this point and installed new lower sprocket with new chain..
