How do you 50+ guys weld? Just wear cheaters under the hood or is there a better setup?

Magnifier lenses will work in many helmets.

I just started wearing glasses this year, I can make them work decently in large window helmets, but sometimes it’s a struggle in the standard lens helmets.

And careful with the ‘old’ statement, I haven’t hit the 50 mark (well, not quite yet!)

Cheater lenses are the best. Cheaters and glasses don't work together well for me.
Every helmet I look at or own, has to have the slots and clasp for cheaters or I pass it over.

Cheaters are your best bet, unless you have cataracts which can be fixed. Several different strengths in them. i have used cheaters for the last 15 years.Keep your clear lenses clean and it helps to have lots of light too.

I use dollar store magnifying glasses, but strangely enough my eyes are getting better with age, for 40years I wore prescription glasses with bifocals but now I only use magnifiers for small print and half the time I forget to use them when welding. But if things are a little dark when welding I will lay something beside the weld like a piece of soap stone or a welding rod for something to follow.

My left eye has improved, due to a cataract. Not yet bad (good?) enough to fix though.

I've posted this before, but it's, probably, useful to see it, again.

I've found the clip-on flip-up lenses to be the most convenient to use. They can be attached to most any glasses, and flip out of the field of vision when not needed, but are still right there when you want to use 'em again. Sure beats a stationary magnifier that is usually dedicated to a specific job requirement. The flips can be obtained in a full-field (large) lens that covers the whole spectacle lens, or in a half-eye flip that covers the top half of the spectacle. These work great when leaning over the fender of a vehicle to work on the top of an engine, or for overhead work. The power range availability of these flips enable near point focusing of from 3' to 13".

A +2.00 diopter lens provides a center focus at 20”, so you may still be too far away from your puddle. I wear a +3.00 diopter flip-up when using my tig torch, providing a focus at 13”. Suggest you up the power to see if it makes a difference.

Amazon has numerous powers and styles available. Suggest stopping by Walmart, etc., to try different powers in “cheaters” for selected work/use distances, then ordering from Amazon. Should cost about $20 or less. Once at the Amazon site, you will have to do a bit of hunting to find flips of the correct (+3.00 diopter) power.

Hmmm. Seems a lot of the line boring I do is overhead these days. May have to think about these versus cranking the neck using a lower portion magnifier.

I have read about these but never tried them. I do use the regular bifocal when I'm in the shop.

Dual bifocal lenses
