Default Rock Separator Project

Well like I don't have enough Project just one more om my plate. I'm going to build a rock/dirt separator. I have ton's of rock to separate around here. There is a lack of dirt in the Hill Country so you gt to do what you got to do. Dirt here sells for about $ 300.00 a truck load, DD knows more about this but I know it's a lot. Well anyway it will take several weeks to finish, I will post Pic's as I go. If you see any short cuts feel free to help out ( input wise ) D. First, cutting of the water tank.

Is that going to be a trommel sort of gizzmo, Dallas? Saw one on Dirty Jobs used to separate garbage.

Why a trommel instead of a flat screen?

In Dallas's case it might just be that he has the materials to build as a trommel. In actuality, most seem to feel that a trommel does a better job of separating more material and less bouncing through the screen. (Mostly due to the material being able to be 'in' the screen longer than on a flat screen for the size, due to the rotation of the screen.

With wet material it has more time for the clumps to break up, dry material the dirt to get knocked off the rocks etc. Both have their advantages though. A large trommel manufacturer is located about 5 minutes away from me, by the way.

Umm...Dallas, if you are paying 300 clams for topsoil, we need to talk. I'm only getting 175ish to your side of the world. I only wish I was getting 300 clams.

Default rock seperator

I never paid much attention to them, but the guys around here that sell “black dirt” have a rotating barrel type thing with the outside cylinder made of expanded metal.
It sits at the end of the elevator, up over truck height, pretty much horizontal, so they can dump “raw” dirt into the hopper and it gets “fluffed up” and the rocks screened out before it falls into the delivery guys truck.
Looks to be hydraulic motor driven.
I don’t know how they empty out the rocks they caught.
I am guessing a tip operation of some kind.

There was a sign up on the road here the other day with that price.

Looking good Dallas!! I know topsoil is sky high around here, so I built a screener last winter, I took the easy route and built a viberating screen rather than a trommel style.

Keep sending pics
