Default Barry Can't Arf Weld

I put this up some time back on my website. I figure it might be fun to see.

http://www.farmersamm.com/a-thing-of-the-past/

You might not be able to access it. I block all traffic from outside the US, except for a few countries. Been a while, I can't remember.

Anyways................................

Here is the stuff for y'all that haven't seen it. Some cool stuff.

The production is great, the cinematography is great, the music is great. This is good stuff.

Enjoyed that. Reminded me of the copper smelter I worked at in Anaconda, MT, back around 1972 or so. Only stayed 3 months. Was for too dangerous a job for me.

When I was younger Sheffield was synonomous with steel, Thatcher and her govt killed the steel industry in the UK although the workers themselves helped by giving her the ammunition she needed. They brought in cheap east european steel at prices the local mills couldn’t compete with.

Had a tour thru one of the steel mills in Hamilton years ago. It’s quite a sight to see.

I have had several tours over the years from the old open ingot ,bottled and caped to the continuous cast process of today .I liked the old blooming mills and the hot strip mills .Hot strip from barely moving to the end of the line at 40 mile per hour .

The hot strip in hamilton comes down an arc, almost like a little ski hill. And as you say, the small cross section piece at the end is moving pretty quick!!

We also went through the rolling mill where they make the steel coils. It’s a similar sort of process, and yes, it’s also flying when it gets down to finished thickness.

What a tremendous machine. Lots of power and heat and dirt. Guess this would be a perfect fit in my garage ;-)

Never fails, follow one link on youtube and an hour later your watching something else entirely.

Of course I've now added a few bottles of "Old Happiness" to my shopping list.

I did a shutdown at a steelmill in New Zealand in ‘98, it was impressive but not the place I would like to work every day.
