Default Help needed

I’m looking for information for a certain product. A customer has a problem with a failed thermostat in one of their rooms. The house boiler system is in floor heat, with about 10 different zone valves controlled by individual wired thermostats thru out the house.

One of the wires going to one thermostat has developed a short, and thermostat is always on. I’ve tested the wires, and I was thinking I could switch wires to unused set, but it is not working out.

Unfortunately, the wires run in the ceiling of the finished basement, so not easily accessible. I’m not sure why it developed a short either, whether a rodent chewing, or possibly a new nail put thru the wire in the wall?

Anyways, I was thinking that I should be able to find a wireless thermostat that I could install in the bedroom, and it would communicate with the wired brain unit in the mechanical room. But so far my research has not come up which a unit that I like, or one I want to trust yet.

I figured I’d ask if anyone here has any suggestions as to what to look for.

I have an older Dayton model, that I will see if it’s still being made, that works this way. You mount the main control unit where you can get the wires to, and the monitoring head you can place elsewhere on a different wall, and is battery powered and send commands to the main unit. I installed this 15+ years ago, and I figured I could find something similar in a quality unit, without paying more than $250 too. But maybe I have my expectations too high.

I really do not want to start trying to run a new wire inside the finished basement ceiling, but might end up that way. Decisions, Decisions.

Grainger sells Dayton, I believe. I don't know if that helps.

HF sells these rod sets for $9. LINK I have two sets so you are welcome to borrow one. They are one of those items that the utility value FAR exceeds the cost and plus, they are well-made. One of those things that you see on sale for $6 and grab it because if you have it, you WILL use it.

PS: you could probably use old phone line to run extra circuits. I have 100s of feet on rolls you can have...

I have a Honeywell T9. It uses wireless sensors. You can put the thermostat in the basement and put a wireless sensor in the room.

That’s not what I use it for, but it would work.

If you do run new wire, check out the magnapull kits. They look like they could work in some situations.

Thanks for suggestions. They give me other things to consider. That magnapull item looks like it could be handy, if I wanted to do more of that type of work to invest in.
