Yeah, I think a double ended wrench would be awkward. And why struggle with a piece of unknownium? Get yourself a piece of 1040/1045 hot rolled and be done with it. There's absolutely no need for anything harder or tougher than that.

My "go to" materials for probably 80 per cent of all the stuff I machine is either 1018 cold finish or 1045 HR. The 1018 is great for anything where I can use most of the original shaft OD as is--start with the right diameter and only turn those features you need. If I'm going to be turning the entire OD then I use 1040/1045; there's no point in paying the premium for cold finish material and then turning it all off.

For anything that needs a fine, smooth finish and a bit more strength I'll go to 1045 ground shafting, 4340 ground for really tough jobs. For cylinder repairs CPO (Chrome and Polish Only) or IHCP (Induction Hardened and Chrome Plated) fill the bill--depends how tough the shaft needs to be.

Anything that needs tougher, harder or stronger material usually gets 4340 HTSR (Heat Treated and Stress Relieved). I use the odd bit of 8620 but not that much since its primarily meant to be case hardened...

never seen any unknownium fail to respond to a grinderium disk.
it is a chuck key FGS
Any steel should be pretty impervious to the forces needed on a chuck key.

lol
I've been sitting here thinking I must have been missing something, or that I'm probably not even nearly strong enough to tighten a chuck or maybe I should have been using a cheater all along.

Its just a piece of metal I kicked up out of the sand don't know where it came from and started to turn it and found it to be hardened but don't know what type it is the key is for my 8" 4 jaw chuck I traded the 10 inch four jaw for and the key needs to travel down with the screw I don't know if it will brake or not but been warned it could happen and it was free so its why I started to try to use it to make a chuck key...

and it's no secret I have always been know to learn things the hard way an this is no different but I'm learning as I go an haven't thrown in the towel just yet...
