Default Starrett indicator help

So one of dads friends is closing shop. I got some goodies and one was this indicator set. I have other indicators I can use with the accessories but would love to get this working. Anyone know of a way to get at the insidey parts?

They are all mechanical, generally the issue is the shaft gets ‘gummy’ where it goes in and out at the back. Try cleaning the stem first and see if that helps before digging in.

The shaft moves in and out freely. So freely that i believe its not connected to anything. The indicator stays in place, so something is off.

I found a used one reasonably priced on egay, might just grab it instead.

I have taken them apart, there isn't much to them.

From my limited experience the odds of a successful "home repair" of sensitive instruments like that are low--a working replacement is probably not a bad idea...

Don't pay much, I have seen them go for $10-25 over the years and some times $2.00 just for the indicator.

They are considered a model T and easier to just use a modern indicator.
