Maybe I am. I just thought a bulk fuel tank would be a good move with renting diesel equipment.

I come up with about 264 gallons for 3’ x 5’ round cylinder.

Check the rules where you are, most areas anything over 100 gallons or so requires placards and fuel permits. So as a ‘portable’ tank you may be out of luck. But....find out who the local fuel suppliers are, and see if you can get diesel delivered, and in particular off road diesel to save you some more. $$.

I wasn't planning on putting more then 100 gallons in the tank.
Using off road diesel is a given. We sell it at work.

Check though, I don’t think the volume in the tank matters as much as the volume of the tank.

Would hate to see you with a hefty fine for trying to make things easy for yourself.

My transfer pump is a fill-rite, been going well for 8-9 years now (intermittent use). I have a screw on fuel/water filter on it as well.

it would be wise to inspect the inside of the tank before using it to transport fuel. especially if you run with it half full.
There are probably no baffles in it. Around here if it leaks and does not meet the code the DOT inspector has to send for a new ticket book and two new pens to get you all written up.

I think he has the supplier covered, but...

What Grey is referring to is that is a lot of fuel to be carting around in the back of a pickup truck. CDLs have a special "classification" for carrying liquid not that it would fall under that category but if that container got filled "by accident", that would be about a ton of liquid sloshing around and I wouldn't count on the tailgate latch to hold it in!

That tank looks rough to me! I would rig up a way to pressurize it and check for leaks. You don't need much pressure, maybe 5-10 PSI. Get a 5gal pail with water and a cup of dish soap and and old paint brush and schlop the soapy water on it and check for leaks, especially at the very bottom where water would collect inside. Do this before you put any fuel in it. If it leaks you should bring it right back where you bought it!

Is it an old home heating oil tank? Is it vented?

yeah looks like a domestic oil tank to me.

not designed to be moved around, possibly leaks, metal so will sweat which is especially bad with modern diesel and injection systems.

Also not bunded. do mobile tanks need to be bunded in the states?

Any more than I think a thousand litres needs to be bunded to 110% over here but most smaller tanks are too.

a diesel tank isnt something I'd be too keen to buy second hand tbh

Gonna need an "English-to-English" translation as to what "Bunded"
means.....

Maybe "bonded" as in a ground wire ?

Maybe "with certified nameplate" ?
