Default New Forge.. Buffalo 248E downdraft

So I have wanted one of the Buffalo forge downdraft forges since I was about 10.

They made down draft hoods from early on with the 660 model.

Buffalo made the downdraft as an option early on.. But the 660 forge was from what I can tell the only model early on.. then the 680..

By the time this model rolled around it was the model 48 forge which was a heavy forge.. Larger firepot with a 1/2" thick or more cast iron body.

The 48 and 49 were Buffalos heavy forges at that time.

I know I have the 48 and I might also have a 49.. But, the 49 has a larger firepot and considered this to be a full on railroad forge for the heaviest of work. There are no numbers anywhere on the larger forge.

I bought it because it was to good a deal to pass up on.

The 48 is 3" deep where the 49 is 7" deep.

Anyhow I'll post photos of both..

the 49 does not have the down draft.

That’s a nice looking forge. Great find! Nice to see that it’s going to someone who’ll use it!

Do you know how old it is?

its a biggin.. We will see how it pans out.. LOL..

With an insert in the firepot it might be ok.. As it stands now it would be great for heavy work..

Figuring out the forge is part of the fun.

here is the 48 and what I believe to be an early 49.

The firepots are exactly the same.

Good on ya, Jen.

Downdraft: early EGR system. If it works on a coal forge, let's see if it'll work on internal combustion engines. Right there some engineer was paying attention to thermodynamics.

Not bad.. A few cracks in the back and the shutters are missing the venturi damper was replaced..

looks like it was abandoned outside someplace or tucked into a barn with a bad roof..

The blower is really nice..
