Scotts, have you checked your manuals for change gear information yet?
I helped a buddy get his big lathe moved into place and wired in. Took out the wall between the machine area and the welding / mechanics area. Took a week but we moved the 6000# hunk of iron from out in te cold to it's new heated home. We also improved the new wall by using 2 X 6's instead of 2 X 4's. You might want to put up sacrificial wall covering so you do not coat the area behind the chuck eith oil. Have fun. Dan.

I did a little paying job on the lathe and this showed up.
Considering how the weather is going It was warm enough so I got started on the post through the compound here are a few pictures. 1 warm enough 2 box of goodies to support Chicago gangsters? ![]() 3 The whole lathe was made in china why not continue? 4 I got the post out, it helps to clean stuff up and take it all apart to see the set screw. 5 That little half circle is threaded and so it the other half circle in the compound. Lets get to where I am so far.
1 sitting there just to get a first look 2 Parts comparison Need to make the one on the left screw into the one on the right. 5/8-11 ought to do. What say you guys? 3 O.D. turned, my feet got cold. Done for tonight. I'll get this turned part separated from the bar stock after drilling and tapping. There is a bit of extra on the large od to face off. I'll probably move around when I install it and drill and tap a set screw like it is now to hold in new part in the compound. I'll cut off the threads on the supplied stud and thread it for 5/8-11 and pin it in the part I am making, there looks to be plenty of length in the new stud to do this with. I picked 5/8 because the stud is .630 inch. Yes, the compound has been off and apart to measure and again to check fits of turned parts. ![]() Scott |

IIRC, the supplied stud is threaded 5/8" - 18tpi.
But you should be able to get away with using 5/8" - 11tpi. Dan.

Thanks Dan,
Yes the wall is not going to rust behind the chuck. ![]() ![]() I'll get out my thread checking tool and check the threads. The ones on the bottom part of the stud are a bit iffy looking. Scott |

The finer the thread the tighter the grip.

Before I spray foamed the shop it rained during the winter in the unheated part and covered the equipment in ice. I had a blue flame, unvented heater that put a lot of moisture inside the shop. The insulated north room was ok but the larger uninsulated south room dealt with condensation on the tin roof and made a frozen rain forest out of the larger south part of the shop. I didn't dare run the blue flame after foaming the shop as I thought that the CO would build up. Don |
