Toe jack from junk

I have been moving my lathe around to work on it. Until now, I have been able to raise it a few fractions of an inch at a time by levering it up with a long bar. Doing it this way means I need help in order to keep track of the blocking.

The next move will happen when I do not have any help, so I needed to make something to help me. Some time ago, I acquired some assemblies made out of 6” x 1/2” thick angle. With a little time and effort, I cobbled up a toe jack adaptor for a cheap I ton hydraulic jack.

It should work, but will have to wait a few days before it is put to the test.

It was a beautiful day here in the high 50s F. The neighbour’s honey bees were out looking for food. I still find it odd that they are so attracted to diesel fuel and WD40.

Well done I like it and thank you for taking the time to post. I have been thinking about just this project myself. I don't have one yet so the thoughts have passed.

Yes, I can see I may build one like this one day and use it the way you intend. Working alone sometimes requires one to be inventive.

These pics are from a long-since-sold Rolalift. Bought for $25, sold for $225 (I think). Maybe will give you or someone else some build ideas...

I remember seeing something very similar to that used for moving piano’s.

I got asked to help move a piano once. One thing I will never agree to do again.

Yep. It was his birthday not long ago according to facebook. I didn't post as he wouldn't have seen it. Just threw up a little nod to him wherever he's enjoying his eternal rest.


I had tasked one of my guys at the range to build a similar jack attachment to one I'd seen on the 'net for lifting shipping containers. I didn't want to have to purchase a smaller jack to fit their rig, so copied and re-measured their design to fit a 20t one I had sitting as a spare. That was back in the fall and since handing off the plans, the material, and the jack I've not seen any results. I've not been in any big hurry. Hell the container's been crooked since we landed it there nearly a decade ago. A few more months ain't gonna hurt.

Not to derail this thread, did you ever get confirmation of Jeff's passing?
