Socket set plastic

My dad has had this small SK socket set for as long as I can remember. As a young child, I remember grabbing this for him many times. After he passed, it is one of the items I am so glad I received. But the plastic that keeps all the tools in place is severely broken apart.

Any suggestions on how I can make a new "organizer" to keep the sockets in their place? I thought of using wood with a router and Forstner bits, but that seems like an awful lot of work.

I have a CNC plasma cutter that can except a router, but I've never used it as a router and don't really want to switch it over and learn how to router with it. If I had a 3-D printer, I would probably use that. Maybe it's time to invest in one…? Do you think they have these online maybe?

How about using some thin strips of metal running length ways of the box and either tack welding or epoxying them in? You could make several sections keeping the sockets together, extensions together in their area and the rachet in its area. Thin plywood might would work also by gluing them in.

Get one of those socket organizer strips, either metal or plastic, and glue it in. That is, if it doesn't add too much height.

...for the metal strips, pop-rivets work too.

I have the 3/4" drive version and there is a metal strip spot welded in to keep the sockets in place. I just let the extensions and ratchet float around.

Line the metal box with thin layer of plastic, like the kitchen stuff to cover bowls with leftovers. Then spray in expanding foam. Place the tools on the plastic covered foam and weight them down. After curing trim off all the extra foam.

I have the 1/4" version of that bought in Chicago in 1940/50 . It has a metal partition to hold the set of sockets but there are a pair of 8 point that don't have room in the partition. :-)

I know I'm bringing up an old thread, but I finally found a solution to this problem. My brother lives next door to me and bought a 3D printer about 6 months ago. I've always been interested in them and wanted one, but I just couldn't figure out something that I wanted to make with one.

Recently, my daughter wanted to build a "room/loft" for her cat, so I decided I'd figure out the software, design some stuff, and finally get into 3D printing. I made a fireplace and a ceiling fan for the "cat room" and it was kind of fun! Then I remembered this socket set I had, and printed out an insert for it. For reference, here's a pic of how bad the original plastic was, and the new custom fit organizer for the set. And yes... I still need to find an SK 3/8" ratchet. If you have one you'd like to sell me cheap, please let me know.

I'm also including a pic of the cat room/loft my daughter and I made. Its up near the ceiling in the corner of her bedroom. It's got hardwood floors, a disco ball, dresser, fireplace, fish tank, window with a mountain view, ceiling fan, area rug, bookshelf, pictures, and mirror.
