But, he recommended bacon grease. It has now become my go-to product when I have to drill holes in metal of any sort. It's fun to make, you get to eat the 'waste', stores well, and is easy to apply with an acid brush straight outta the shop fridge. No nasty chemical smell while using, washes off easily. You can even lick it off your fingers if necessary.
Most bacon contains a lot of salt. Does the salt affect corrosion?

No idea. I suppose it could be an issue in a clean environment. Everything I drill holes in usually has bigger issues to worry about than a little salt. Stupid high temps, other corrosives, carbon, and myriad "cleaning products" are probably more caustic to the metal.

I think it was Lard, not bacon grease.

Salt is generally not soluble in fat, but there could be some in actual bacon grease.

I have discovered that the high speed steel ones are easier to resharpen. However, for the particular use these are for, I can also bore them in other ways. So, someone will have to make a call at some point as to whether we get more cutters or just bore them instead.

These guys will do carbide and HS steel. I have a 1.5" annular in there now.

Do you happen to know what they charge? I don't think there's anybody here in the Lower Mainland anymore that sharpens them. I guess I could call and find out but in any case the shipping would probably kill any cost saving...

Thans Gerry! I’ve been poking around, finding various places for different things but til now struck out on the resharpening of the carbide annular cutters. I’ll get there sometime in the next while and see what they can do.
