Kinda, sorta, but not really. I never could really nail down anything that stated as much, but some folks on his FB page sorta confirmed it. Not knowing an actual full name and just using the unusual spelling of his first name and home town got a "Well, that could be him" hit.

So I've just sorta operated under the premise that it was even though the photo in the obit doesn't look anywhere near what I imagined him. Maybe had they cropped the photo a bit larger we'd have seen his trademark Bibs. He was very fond of telling me how he and my own dad could've been confused for twins.

I found the same obit in my searching. The 1 F in his name correlates but I don't know where the LW Hihway name comes from. The pic in the obit does look like him but you can tell that photo is a few decades old.

So I managed to get my lathe back functional again. I moved it back into place, then used the toe jack to take the rollers out from under it and lower it onto the hockey pucks it normally sits on. I put the lathe on pucks as vibration isolation from the epoxy coated concrete floor.

As it happens, the toe jack minimum height is 1/2”, and the pucks are 1” thick, so no extraordinary measures are required to lower the machine right to the floor.

All in all, it worked as designed with very little drama. The only issue I had was I did not consider the upper body of the jack assembly rubbing against the machine, so got a couple scratches in the paint.

I am counting this a win.

Sounds like a piece of cardboard or carpet scrap next round and you’re all set…..or if you’re like me, what’s a few scratches.

True, I may not use this often, but it has already been worth the time it took to build in this single move as it is so much more controllable than a crowbar. It won't take much space to store either.
The material came out of my treasured inventory pile, so total cost is a handful of welding rod and a few grinder discs and brushes.

A little more care in use will prevent the scratches too. A little time with a flap disc will take off the sharp edges that tend to scratch. The rest will be cured with cardboard or some soft packing as Greywynd suggests.

I've always been jealous of you northerners with your endless supply of hockey pucks. I catch myself wondering if they just suddenly appear like golf balls do down here? Even if there's no golf course in sight, if you walk long enough around any large patch of grass you can get them for free. I'd get out and walk more if there were a chance I could find random hockey pucks laying around. I have to have mine imported through Amazon.

Glad the jack worked out for ya, and as far as storage I don't see how that would be much of a problem. Those little jacks always manage to find holes to fill and eventually get buried in. I'm fond of the orange or red ones because they're bright enough to stand out from the pile. Maybe a bright coat of paint will help keep it from attacking any toes?

One of the best people I never had a chance to meet.
