Hydraulic Power Pack/Unit
Looking for 10 gpm, average 1500psi, with a 2200-2500 max pressure. One of the main uses would be to drive hydraulic motors, and I want to be able to adjust the speed of the motor. On the commercial units that we use at work, they use a variable output pump that is activated by an electric pusharm. I’m guessing a flow control valve and a bypass line can also be used? I know the very basics of hydraulics and that’s about it. To drive the pump I figure there are three possible options. Electric motor, gas/diesel engine, or tractor PTO. I’m not looking to be ‘cheap’, but if I can do it for a reasonable price over time I’m okay with that. Give me some input on what sort of other factors and variables I’m not thinking of! Looking forward to seeing what the collective mind here puts forward. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The variable output pump will build less heat. If this is for your bore repair I would go with that as you tend to run them for more than a few hours at a time and the heat build up from a relief and flow control system might be too much. Or you could run a heat exchanger to keep the fluid cool and that adds another layer of complexity to the system.
The above system should run on any power you decide to go with. Scott |

+1 on what Scotts said I would go electric drive with a larger than required tank reservoir. Because of how long the run cycle might be more is better sort of like a deep sump pan on a high performance motor. 10 GPM figure on running 15-20 Gal tank the oil will stay cooler and the pump happier. Electric drive is quieter and more dependable IMO unless power is an issue. I would also consult our "Guru" Ron on all things oil related on perhaps the best Synthetic Hydraulic Fluid that would be least effected by Temperature extremes. Oh, I thought this might be for bore welding depending on end use this might be overkill

I cannibalized an old Coates truck tire machine to make my power pack. There is a thread here somewhere about it. No clue how to find it it's many years old but, the power pack is still getting it done when I need it.

Thanks, Digr I am truly amazed you found it that easily. What's cool about it is the Hydraulic motor circuit I can use with parts of the original tire machine that ran the mount/demount cycle so it has gear reduction mechanical advantage. It will Cold Twist 1/2" pickets for railings with out even grunting.

If you are by here, I have hydraulic tanks and filters and multiple stage pumps. I also have a pump and motor from a concrete mixer.

It's been a while...
I built this based around a 12 volt power pack. Plumbed in a single spool control with pioneer fittings. Made to be 100% portable.

Getting some ideas for sure.
The main plan is for this to be able to run my boring unit, which is where the flow and pressure specs came from. However I always figure that it can do other things too, maybe a press in future, or saws, or who knows exactly. I even debated about setting something up to be PTO powered off the little Kubota for the fact that for now it will only see occasional use. Gerry this isn’t a ‘rush’ project by any means so good chance I will be by again before I get anything started. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
