It is not surprising that the skills of the hand are being lost to the believe that some machine or special tool is needed. There is little profit for corporations by promoting old skill values. Corporations have been promoting speed and convenience for few generations now. The result is a loss of the skills that our predecessors have spent a lifetime learning, one of humanities greatest tragedies I think.

I'll give you qty (2) rocks (size & shape of my choosing) and you go make those flares. And make them consistent, for both appearance, as well as engineered strength (those aren't just for looks). And leave the material in the proper hardness, so that there are no surprises in usage. |

I’m sure it would involve countless attempts and possibly several lifetimes of learned skills passed down from generations of skilled people.

Depending on hole size, I've even seen guys use a hole saw, then press a trailer ball into the hole while supporting the dimpled piece on some neoprene sheet.

Which is the reason that I grow my food, and have done blacksmithing, and do my repairs when I could hire it. Keep the skills alive a throw away economy.

I posted a few years back about using a trailer ball for dimples,i welded a bolt to the shank end and chucked it up in my drill press, using it as an arbor press.
Thin metal was dimpled with ease. I also use the drill press as a valve spring compressor for car heads. I also made a tapered thing to press dimples with,it starts out about 1/2'' and widens out to about 2.5,its 6'' long and necked down on the big end to chuck up in the drill press or in the regular press. I drill the size of the dimple in a 2x4 and press down into the wood, works fine. |
