Default welding gas question

I have a bottle of gas for mig which is argon and CO2. It has sat for a year and has not been moved at all in that time. Would the gases separate due to their different weight?

Are you talking what we sometimes call C25 here? (75% Ar, 25% CO2) Our resident alchemist Ron, should be able to accurately answer that question for you. I say no problemo, but you could always take the cylinder and shake it up like mixing a drink, then pour it over ice to make sure... (jk!)

I don't know what the "chemist" will say but from a practical point of view the gases do not separate...

I don't think it'd be an issue. I regularly go long stretches between cracking my bottle open and can't tell a difference. My lack of skill and practice makes a bigger difference than the gas quality at that point

No, they will not separate.

If you ever find the magical cylinder than can separate gases, keep it you can make a lot of money with it.

As long as they are gaseous an "reasonably" close in molecular size, they mix well. only when they get largely different as in something like Propane and the components of air do they tend to stratify. :-)

Several post later I remembered the word I wanted to use, Brownian (Sp?) motion, check that out. :-)

If you want a scientific explanation as to why gases mix and do not separate look up ‘Brownian motion’.

That what I told them a few post back. Don't bother a "welder" with a scientific explanation. :-) :-)
