Depends a lot on soil .Around here so many rocks the direct burial stuff tends to get insulation issues and prone to failure .

I used to say that conduit was cheap insurance but bidenflation has made PVC conduit way more expensive then it was, but conduit is still wise unless you bury the cables in sand I would still pipe it.

What’s the code/utility company say?

I know in Onterrible the one job I did it all had to be in conduit. Another it was just the ends. Both had to be I think minimum 3’, but with labelled ribbon 12-18” above them.

I like to use Teck 90 armoured cable. Good for under ground, under water, anything. Your regs may vary. All power to my shop and house right from the pole is done with Teck 90 3/0 and 1/0

Teck is not used in the US, & the equivalent MC cable is mind numbingly expensive, as are the fittings.

That surprises me, but it is the way it is.
Waterproof Teck connectors are 50 buck each but the cable, because it is so common in industry is available used for cheap. At a scrapper's, I bought a roll of #1 teck un-used and never had the paper cover off the wooden reel, 830 ft for 1100 bucks, price of scrap copper.

I never thought I'd pay more for conduit than for service cable!

565.59 and an hour drive one way for the conduit. $325 for 122ft of 4ot aluminum service cable. The cable was surplus from a job an electrician did, it was an hour drive too. The conduit was $10 cheaper per 10ft secti9n than anywhere else, I needed 12 and they had 10.

I also got my permits today. 180 for those. I called the inspector to verify depth, 18inches to the top minimum. He also said nec rules change Monday and there are a lot of changes! The rules go by the permit date so it seems I REALLY dodged a bullet.

One thing that you can probably count on is the rules change will not be cheaper to install.

So, quick tally, I'm calling it $2k so far. 2 panels, 2 stereo boxes, 2 permits, some service cable, pallet jack to move things, and fuel(I'm adding $76).
