You're welcome. Thing is, if we shut down the image function then we wouldn't be able to use smilies either and a lot of people would get constipated or something.
So the only other recourse is what you see - one of us has to be the asshole & that naturally falls to me. The payoff is that you (or anyone else) can usually come back here five years from now and your pictures will still be here & the thread will still be useful to anyone who reads it even if you eventually edit your Photobucket storage.

I have 3 of these in various states of assembly in my shed and shop. My plan was to build a multi function sled, complete with V style air compressor (old air conditioning compressor) and 12 volt alternator with inverter. Kind of like a shop for the field.

There was a company in Winnipeg Manitoba that built conversions using surplus aircraft generators and included a cowling and bearing rest of sorts.

I bought one of those generators from a farmer years ago. He had it on an old Oliver tractor. I had the old PM , Science and Mechanics or MI books, don't recall which. Had an article on how to install on a car. Short story, I put it on my '78 F150, drove it with a serpentine belt. Even used a vacuum pot to kick up the rpm on arc strike and slowly go back to idle. The coil is mentioned in the article. Checked it with an avr during one weld, solid 165 amps and smooth as silk. Note that it did holler and scream on striking the arc but just for a moment. Too bad I didn't take any pics.

I put just two heavier belts on. If this unit goes into service, it will need three or four I think as the two were tight and they still slipped a bit but....it burns rod real nice!



The control seems to work well as I varied the current with 3/32 and 1/8 7018.

Now to pull it all apart again to do a proper valve job, paint it all, put all the covers back on, and then. ...who knows?

I did not post much about the engine work I did. It was done before i posted my question here about the welding unit. The welder and engine were sitting in a scrap yard waiting their turn to go into the grinder. I thought that would be a shame. All tune up procedures were done and all adjustments made ie, governor, valve clearances, etc but the biggest factors in getting the VF4 going, I think, were a new fuel pump, coil in the magneto, and valve lapping, ....more like valve grinding by hand actually. I found out a friend has a valve grinding set up, after I finished hand lapping plus I found 2 burnt valves and one really corroded one. I am going to replace them, and do the rest properly. I was trying all along to keep the investment low cause I realized a long time ago, that I don't really need such a brute. I learned a lot though so time and money well spent probably.

I just wanted to see if I could get it going. Now I don't need it or have room for it. I do wonder if I could use one of the pulley grooves for a starter and belt. That might make it more appealing to sell. Ahhh, another project. ...

If you want an electric start....just slap the welding leads on a 12 or 24 volt battery with the welding rheostat turned right up and it will crank an engine.
