?????cable tree/limb saws?????

Is there any practical use of these cable chain saws or is it an exercise in futility?

I do not need one for camping, I am not an arborist but I do have 4 limbs that need trimming on one side of two trees before I can safely drop them on one side of my utility wire from the road/transformer and my first pole.

I'm not worried about dropping the trees to the West as a 300 hp tractor will ensure a directional drop.

The limbs on the East side will sweep up and snag the wire I'm sure.

My question is, will spending $45 or $60 bucks for a professional rig actually work? Or is a more or less last attempt of cutting something without a bucket truck?

If I wanted to hire this out I would not be asking.

I just use a pole saw. Long aluminum tube with a 10" - 12" curved wood saw blade. If needed you can cut off branching limbs before you cut the main branch to stay away from wires. Good for up to 12' in height. They do make powered ones too.

They work but they're slow--relatively. If you can work with two people who can stand a few feet apart--so the cable isn't a full 180 deg. wrap around the branch--they seem to pull through a bit better. If you can get up closer with a ladder or lift a small chainsaw is obviously going to be faster. If you're working from a ladder consider where the end of the branch is going to go when it breaks off. There are many Youtube videos of what can go wrong...

Many moons ago I worked for a neighbor that ran a tree service business. How high are the limbs? They have cordless battery pole saws for cheap nowadays. If you make a bottom cut maybe a 1/3 into the limb then make a top cut about 10 to 12" farther out on the limb you can get the limb to peel loose and come off in a fairly controlled fashion. Allowing you to make a safe getaway.

It's above a utility wire, so at least 15'? Do you have a blanket to protect yourself from the voltage. I'd probably feel safer with a cable saw than a pole saw. You can rig the cable saw with non conductive rope/cord at both ends. Just don't do it in the rain. Since it is on the secondary side of the transformer it's only 120/240 volts. Even at that, I wouldn't want to risk any direct contact with any conductive material.

None of the limbs are touching the wire. But if I cut the tree down, those limbs under the wire will touch it once the tree starts to fall over.

I'm removing only those limbs under the wire, none over it.

I was thinking of using a pulley at a distance on the far side to give a wider chain cut and less wrapped on 2/3rds of any limb. In lieu of having another person on the other side.

I have a pair with the cord, but with the blade being inline with the pole, making a cut will be at an angle. I'm going to try and alter the way the pole attaches to the saw and see if I can have it cut with the horizon. That should work well and keep things falling down and not swinging to one side.

I could use the personnel basket I have for the F/L, but have no one at hand I trust to run it while I'm in the basket.

Well I would ask since the tree is to be cut down are the limbs of a size you could lasso with a nice chain and lock the ram charger in four low and ease forward? Maybe cut the branch a 1/3 of the way then pull? Crude but sometimes effective.

I have a electric pole saw from hobo freight that I am quite surprised with. Use a 20% off coupon and it’s a good value.

How about hiring a young lad experienced with a chain saw and YOU lift him with the forklift?
