![]() I cut some coupons out of 1/4" x 3" and did some open root multi pass welds. 1/8" 6010 root, 3/32" 7018 fill and cap. Flat position. 3/32" land, 1/8" gap. More practice required..... Might use a narrower gap next round. Like 3/32".

Watched a Weld.com video again. They were using a narrower gap and smaller land with the same rod size and type with similar amperage (1/8" 6010 at 90 amps). That might be this afternoon's project.

Still not perfect, but a lot better. Reinforcement on root and cap both less than 1/8", so should be within spec. Seems a bit rough coming off and running onto the tacks. I need to feather them better.
Not sure what caused the porosity in the cap. Could be moisture in the rods as I do not have a rod oven and the rods are over a year old.
