I was thinking more as a way to slow it down when desired. Set the top speed at full pedal, and be able to go anywhere from zero to full throttle.

I was with you on that part.

I use a half dozen stumps cut and somewhat now disked on the ends for pounding/working copper. Not as an anvil, but more like someone using a leather bag with shot inside for forming etc.

Another use for this particular hammer is for 'hammering on' marks on copper bowls, pots and pans etc. leaving the marr'd surface showing the tiny dings of the hits as the view to be left for viewing.
