A technologically advanced society would teach their children how to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together before teaching them how to use a lighter.

Aren't energy consumption and computers supposed to make life less stressful?

If you are not having fun then you are doing it wrong.

Plain bearings made from 932 bronze. These will be pressed into each end of the spool. The bearing in the center is an original sample from which I took the dimensions.

The drive dog had exploded on this winch which is the reason I paid little for it. Rather than buy a replacement I decided to make one.

It seems the original was cast iron. I suspect this part is intended to be the overload protection as it is fairly easy to replace. I made the new one from 1018 steel. I suppose the brass worm gear will now let go in the very unlikely event that I do overload it.

The drive dog has two 5/16” keyway slots cut into the bore at 180 degrees apart. To make these slots I made a special mandrel. It is much like a standard mandrel with a standard broach slot but also a 5/16 keyway slot 180 degrees from the broach slot.

After one slot is cut the mandrel is rotated 180 degrees and a key is installed in it. This locates the broach slot for the following cut.

Cutting the key slots on the spool shaft. I don’t know what the original shaft is made from but I don’t think it is 1018 steel that I am using.

The steel block clamped to the end is to reduce vibration.

Toe clamping the steel block to the table would have been prudent. I failed to sufficiently tighten the indexing fixture, the result was a wondering off of the slot I was cutting.

I welded the mishap. I did not want to remove the piece from the fixture as it would have been difficult to replace it in the correct orientation. Notice the paint test samples that I use to protect the machine table from weld spatter.
