Thought I’d put these pictures in this thread. Looking back thru this thread, brought back se memories of how the shop looked when I started there 7 years ago today. I’ve made a few changes, mostly for the better I think.

I spent all day today adding shelves behind the old Summit lathe that I used for my first year learning at this shop. I’ve prepped the wood over the last 2 months in slow time as I could find it. Today was slow enough, so it was install time.

After getting the shelves installed, I started filling them with our various imperial and metric test threaded pieces, that we have collected over the years. Some are actual nuts, or was shop made test parts as needed. My goal is to make them much easier to find and keep organized.

I consolidated the threaded pieces from 3 different areas, but I still have some in one of those area still, but they are better organized now too. In a drawer.

Next on filling the shelves will be moving the old Aluminum, cast iron, and Bronze parts that I save to be able to make various items as needed. If I hoard it, I need to be able to find what I need quickly.

Then I will be redoing the shelf’s that I had old stock pieces for increased drill bit storage, for all the Morse taper drills we have sitting in boxes behind the old Libby lathe.

Looks really nice. I like the idea of shelf on an otherwise unused wall.

On another note-- I have been reading your Arcdroid thread. I'll comment over there to avoid drift. Thank you.

Well, that’s what happens when you push the lathe close to the wall, and not much room there. But, keep it out just enough to put 1x6 boards for shelves, and look at all the extra space! I’m mounting theses shelves in the metal building purlins, which keeps from shoving stuff into the insulation.

I designed the shelves so they are only about 24-28” wide, so they are fairly strong for that length, and only 5-1/2” tall. Narrow enough that prevents you from stacking too much in front of other items, making bit easier to find stuff I stashed years ago.

I plan on doing something like this in my pole barn along the one wall I just plywood up, and go to the ceiling. Then fit other machines up to it, as close as I can, and still access the shelves.

Got new shelves almost filled up today. There is still a couple shelves empty for future hoarding of used stock. Or old job parts we may want to save.

Then demolished old shelves I put in 4 years ago or so. I will be redoing this section to organize Morse taper drills, and other tools that I want to have closer to machining area, vs tool room office.

And had the welder finish welding the castors on the drill press stand. Then I got that painted. Hopefully I’ll get the drill press on that tomorrow, along with a new master shut off switch to power down VFD drive when we leave shop, vs having to unplug it. Not sure if we had any voltage spikes, but this is the Third VFD on this drill press in the 7 years I’ve been here. The last replacement, we put in a switched outlet, so we can kill power to it when we leave more easily.

Went to work for couple hours just to get drill press installed on the new cart today. And wired in a new power switch so can cut power to the VFD when not needed.

I’m really happy with how easy it rolls around. When I was putting the caster plate’s support on, I had clamped a piece of angle to plates across from each other with the wheels tacked on already , and had the angle base shimmed up 1/2” from the table so the casters mounts would be in the same plane. I think this really helped in the casters turning easily.

I think the granite carts I made earlier this year, the swivel casters plates on those might not be perfectly lined up, and those carts do not seem to turn as easily. I think I need to see about shimming those wheels into better alignment.

After that was done, left work to work on replacing some water supply lines at my church.

Whats the open space in front of the drill press foot for? I'd think that would put you at an awkward lean to use the press. Would you be able to turn the DP 180* and have that at the rear?

I did end up turning the drill press around. Originally it was that way because of the swivel castors with locks needed a wider plate to swivel. And I wanted the locks to the front.

But I also wanted the center of the wheels outside the footprint of the drill press base for the most stability.

I was thinking about putting a board in that open spot for some sort of storage, but have not decided on what yet.

After putting drill press in the new home, I figured out the motor belt guard was hitting the wall, and if I turned the base around, it would hit the wall and prevent the motor guard from hitting up high.

I have an idea of adding a threaded rod floor stop/ leveling screw , if we find that we need to better immobilize the drill press when using, but I’m not thinking we will need that. We shall see.
