Default My 4 Wheeler Sits Forlorn

This poor girl hasn’t even had a peek in months, years even, and with her tarps rotting right off of her!

Today I must buy a new tarp, then strip her and have a look.

I was hoping to take it off and show you, but by the time I got back from the hardware store with some rope an a tarp it had started raining agai,

Under the tarp is a 1963 International Scout chassis, with 4.88 gears, dual range transfer case, and power takeoff Ramsey winch.

It has the larger 1967 four-cylinder engine and also has the body from a 1967 V8 scout which we picked up in Arizona in 1973. The original body was well perforated from living in Minnesota, Utah & Washington.

The Arizona body is pretty nice except that we relocated the radiator bulkhead to match the 4 cyl engine. It has 100 pop rivets holding it together because we had no way to spot weld.

Scouts were awesome! I love me some pto winches. I've got them on my M.V.s and I'd like to put a hydro pto on my pickup.

I rode all over America in the tiny back seat as a kid. I was 12 when we swapped the engine.

As a teen I sandblasted the frame and helped my dad swap bodies.

Then he retired, moved to California, bought a Honda car, and never drove it again.

It’s only been driven about 200 miles since 1975. It hasn’t moved at all since ‘82.
The rear brakes are frozen so I have to start there. It won’t roll.

I did start getting the tarps off so here’s a little striptease for you.

Those Armstrong Norseman’s were purchased about 1973.

The tires have been kept covered up inside most of their life and they were in remarkable condition. 90%+ tread and only 50 years old. LOL

I will post some better pictures of the car.

My father passed in December 2002.
He was quite a guy.
I’m so glad he never sold the Scout.

The hood’s been closed 20 years. I guess it’s time.

My dad was a mechanic by trade, in the late 60’s he had, IIRC, a Scout which could have been along these lines. In snowstorms the two wheel drive tow truck got parked, and the Scout, with tire chains on all four corners, became the recovery vehicle.

As a young man I helped a guy who boarded bird dogs for the local wealthy familys. one of those guys owned the IH dealership. He had a scout like that he hunted out of. They were going hunting in Refugio and wanted me to follow them there. They took off and between the little 4banger engine, balloon tires and a grossly overloaded dog trailer, I soon fell behind. The little Scout would make about 50mph and with those tires and years of abuse it was all over the road. They had to turn around several times and wait on me, bitching the whole time. We finally got there and traded rides, they were going to hunt and bring the scout back, I got to take the new Lincoln town car home.

The next week they had me go by the IH dealership and pick the scout up, they had "work" done to it. I went in and asked the shop foreman what they found and he said nothing! I told what it was doing, he laughed and said " that tight SOB told us one of the tires was low on air"

I learned a lot from those guys, mostly they rich because they never spend it.

I dug through my old IHC literature. Here is a bit of it.

Dad saved me two new OEM felts for the front axle.
