Meant to add, that is a horrible design for a hatchet, although it might be fun to make just for a forging exercise. As it is, there is more weight in the handle than in the head, and the weight in the head is not balanced well at all.

I do have a piece of hardenable rebar somewhere in the shop. I will have to dig it up and take pics. The roll marks on the outside are completely different from the everyday stuff most people have dealt with.

True in your observation. But, it may be a good project in teaching up and coming blacksmiths the art of blacksmithing. I dont do any blacksmithing myself so I do have a clue.
