I know a lot of our welders prefer leaving the engine drives on high, saves it idling up and down, and also gives a higher voltage at startup. That in turn helps reduce cold starts and easier arc starting.

My lincoln MP210 runs 7018AC like a dream, but I have yet to find another rod I like on it. I have an old tombstone at home that has always run 6011 well, even the hobart stuff from TSC. They run horribly on the 210. I've played with the inductance and it mainly just changes the puddle width but doesn't prevent the stalling and stubbing rods. Keeping the hot start all the way up is a bit better but doesn't make a huge difference.

It has been a nice machine for portable work as long as I don't have to weld up cracks or do stuff where I need a root pass. I'd like to get an engine drive some day but don't do enough outside work to justify it right now. Hell the cheaper engine drives don't get great reviews for running 6010 either

I wound up grabbing this little 110volt stick/tig welder just to play with. Yeswelder 110volt, 125amp dc, stick/tig welder. Came with the welder, electrode cable/rod holder, work cable/clamp, and shoulder strap. $62.08 shipped to my door with the discount coupon.

9-1/4" in length, 5-1/2" in height, and 3-1/2" in width. Weighs 4.5 pounds. Very tiny indeed. Hopefully I will get to try it out in a few days if possible.
