Idler wheel

Idler wheel off of a small excavator was so wore that the bearing races and the bearings left the area. Had to light up the old lodge and shipley because off its size. Had a hell of a time boring it out, it must have work hardened some how.

1 wheel bored out

2 turned a new hub to receive pressed in bushings

3 hub installed

4 new axle, the holes for the spring pins even lined up

I bought this Pilgrim table for the mill for 50 bucks a few

years ago and it finally paid for itself, the wheel looks to be

at a 90 but it is tilted a tad for drilling

1 set up for drilling and tapping for grease fittings

2 a grease fitting for each bushing

3 all done with grease groove cut in the bushings

Thats nice work, Ted. It's gonna be the best part of that machine.

Yeah, I agree. I love doing that kind of repair work. Don't get that much of it these days--too many places that just want to replace parts and not actually fix things...

I agree, had that situation when I worked on a minesite. The mentality was was rip it out, put a new one in and chuck the old one out. We had a job with a bronze bush to hold packing on a reciprocating plunger and when they got worn they were chucked out and a local shop was making replacements at about $60 a piece. I saved heap of old ones and ran a test, I bronze welded the inside, 3 jawed it and bored to size, face, turn round and face again. Came in at under $20 each.
