The shape of the generator changed in '73 to a '6-sided housing', this is when it changed to aluminum wiring, but I am not sure of this. The newer units had the electronic idler which worked much better than the older vacuum operated idlers which are quite touchy. A good working mag can be quite trouble free but these engines can be converted to distributor(see link). I spent some time with one that had been doctored with sugar and left to sit for years. I have some notes on the vacuum idler if you want them.

I'm not sure what the machines with the red dash have that make them more desirable, but any of these are highly thought of and well worth restoring. The Continental is used in forklifts and other machines so parts for them are not hard to come by. Phil
