Default What is it?

I picked this up the other day from the salvage yard. But I don't know what it came off of.
It's about 110lbs and the upper piece has a 3/8" Hardinge collet in it. The cylinder holding the collet is spring loaded and has about one inch of travel and turns freely.
It looks like a lathe tailstock to me, but I have never seen one mounted on a cross-slide before and can't figure why you would want to.
Any ideas as to what it is? What it came from? Is it worth restoring?

Looks similar to part of an old valve grinder I once had. The collet gripped the valve stem.
I salvaged the cross feed from it years ago, still have it around somewhere.
