![]() The hold down has a face like a lock washer on a round shaft and then a hex nut style shoulder at the top that you hold with a box wrench. The bolt slides through it and you tighten the bolt with a ratchet until the rivet nut has collapsed. It works surprisingly well. I have thought about one of the manual setters I see on amazon that work like a pop rivet gun but haven't tried one. I have been buying rivet nuts in 5/16-18 and making use of the setter that came with the toolbox when I need them.

I searched for an installation kit for the a weathergaurd porkchop box and found this. In the pic, it appears to include the tool I have. I have not been able to find anything like it any other way. I am sure they viewed the tool as disposable but I held on to mine and have used it to install a couple bags of rivet nuts besides what came with the box.

I have a hand one that I bought on sale at princess auto a few years ago. I just got to the point I needed to buy more inserts a year or so ago. I don’t use it often, though it’s worked well so far for what I’ve done with it.
With the inserts being aluminum, it’s not a big deal if you have to drill one out here or there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

https://www.boltdepot.com/Rivet_nut_hand_tool_US.aspx I was searching for a tool that uses standard socket-head cap screw as the mandrel, so I wouldn't have any issues finding replacement mandrels. I've only found one pneumatic tool that uses socket-head cap screws, but it was way too expensive. I haven't found a two-handled squeeze-type tool yet that uses cap screws either. |

I have had a need for such a tool before and happen to have a couple hundred rivnuts from an auction lot. The zamazon link Matt posted had another link to a tool with various rivnuts and mandrels for $60. Big pop-rivet style tool. The tools you link to Spencer are a little pricier than I would pay just for one tool.
Any chance you can post a pic of the mandrel of the tool you have, Matt?

That is pretty close. The weathergaurd tool just came with a hardened 5/16" bolt to use, I can't remember if it even has a headstamp but I assume its harder than a normal bolt. I'm pretty sure you could get away with using a grade 8 bolt whatever size you need for a couple holes, the rivet nuts don't seem very hard and I think they will strip easier than the bolt.

For a low priced option, I have a 1/4 inch rivet setting tool made by this company (looks almost identical to the rivet nut tool) that I have been very happy with for the money. I've been tempted to buy this kit but haven't pulled the trigger yet as I only use them a couple at a time here and there.
