I think that a screw splitter is much more dangerous than a hydraulic unit.
Once a screw splitter grabs something you can not stop it the damage continues until you split or die trying
If your hydraulic splitter is properly designed it will never get stuck in a gnarly piece but will power through it. proper side tables will catch the big pieces that can do damage and not allow them to fall on your leg or foot.
If the only body parts that can get in the bite belong to the person operating the controls the risk of crushing or maiming is greatly reduced. Almost every year some new resident gets hurt or worse hurts a family member because they let a helper get in the bite.
Just as every summer fingers and toes get sacrificed to the lawn mower god .
