I first became aware of Robert Bruno and his iron house project sometime in the 70's I think, when he would have been in the early stage of it.
I was friends with a little Jewish lady named Eve who was secretary to a fellow who ran a small hydraulics & transmission repair shop down on Avenue H. I only met Leroy briefly one time but she talked about him a good bit & one day she told me that he had become friends with this odd professor-type who was building a steel structure out in the canyon. Best I can figure, Leroy was involved in helping him with the crane mentioned in the article.

Eve was amused by the whole thing. She often talked about Leroy, whom she admired for his skill in his work and she also joked about his own eccentric nature. From her point of view they were very kindred spirits so it was natural that their paths would cross.

I didn't think much about it at the time and Robert has become much more a topic of conversation after his death than during the long period when he was active. I know there was more derogatory criticism about the house being an eyesore back then & less admiration for the art and craftsmanship embodied in it. However one perceives it though, it was a monumental undertaking for one man and 30 plus years of pursuit in one artistic expression is one hell of a tribute to the man's vision & dedication.
