Matt, I made a set of burners like that out of pipe, but machined a stainless cone for the end that slides and locks by setscrew. I found that machining out the threads on the air intake made a big difference on flame stability as the turbulence of the air and resistance to flow is reduced.

I don't have a lathe but I might knock the threads down with a die grinder some time. The threads on the output end tend to help retain the flame but I never gave any thought to the inlet. Thanks for the tip.
