Default Laser welding

Anybody used one of the Chinese Laser wirefeed welders, the 2-3 kw ones?

In the 2000 time frame we in a wheel plant investigated Laser welding . We could not achieve production rates at that time

Impressive video, if it really does all that. Cool etching/ cleaning cycles.
Forgot to see the cost though.

I see they are on alibaba for $3000. These are the No Name brand or private label. When they put a brand name like Razortech on it and a website, then they go for US style pricing...although 10K is more in the ballpark.
From what I've seen, rusty steel is a no go. The laser will shut off the moment it loses contact with the work

Never used one of those, we did have a laser welder at the plastics company. It had an arm that was servo motor driven that held the optics. I know with it, the ‘bulb’ that generated the laser power, had a finite lifespan, I want to say somewhere around a couple thousand hours. Replacement cost was fairly high.

We also had a lens damaged, one of the focusing lenses, and again, was somewhere in the few thousand range to replace it.

Something like that, I would say is a buy it, use it til it quits, then plan on replacing it. Who knows how long til it quits though.

Wow, that's nuts I didn't even know such a thing existed outside of Heavy Industry

No experience with the latest small cheap laser welders. Before I retired, we picked up a smallish CNC programmable laser cutter/welder. It would cut SS tubing to shape, and then weld the parts together in the required configuration. We also did a study on welding dissimilar metals for our production cathode line, welding stainless to copper (or copper to stainless). No purchase was made while I was employed there.

I do know that cutting copper on our laser cutting tables was more than problematic. The pool of molten copper is highly reflective and the laser would destroy itself by reflecting the light back into the lens.
