I ordered a #2 Stainless steel Sock filter on Amazon.. Best looking quality for the price..

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ZTXNPM42&psc=1

And found some stainless steel bags to fit it on Dudda Diesel.

Your best option for a pump is going to be a Diaphragm Pump they won't chop the trash any smaller and they tolerate crap well. Not, real hard to fix and maintain either

So a couple comments in this thread made me think about what to do with some oil/ water that I drained from the bottom of some buckets I got. I learned the hard way this weekend how bad that stuff plugs up lines and filters and renders oil burner useless, after several cleanings.

But my frugal oil gathering has to make me pay somewhere, and that will be with a bit of time to deal with it.

So I’m tempted now to pull the big side off my heater, and put in a cast iron pan in the bottom. Then I think I can pour in a couple cups each time I fire it up of the water/ oil mix, and it should burn off/ evaporate the water as the burner burns. Just make a few extra BTUs in the warming up of the shop. Might be better than trying to dispose of the mixture on a camp fire sometime.

The burner burns hot enough so it keeps tge chimney clean, and smoke is clear looking, so it does not look like I am burning oil.

I've seen them at many shops.. But have never used one.. Nor are they talked about in any literature I have found with Oil heaters..

Do they have a place.. I think so..

I have had a chance to use it and it does work well. The unit I purchased is supposed to be able to pull a good deal as well.

I think the ideal setup is one that pulls the oil into the tube sock filter and then thru the pump..

The problem is most pumps have to have oil in them and then pressurize it thru the filter.

The water and sludge if set on a pan inside the burner will evaporate and the oil will eventually burn if there is excess O2 in the burner.

Interestingly there is usually a lot of spitting and sputtering when the oil and water mixture is put into a pan all ready on fire and hot..

Lots of spattering..

The ideal is to settle, then Filter, Then centrifuge.

I think the sock filter is the item I've been looking for.

I had no idea they existed and think it has enough to do some major debris removal before it clogs..

Then shake it down and filter some more.

I'm about 3/4tank of 275 gallons..

There is a definitive layer in there.. I'm not sure what it is.. It burns really hot in the furnace.

Less soft yellow flame and more whitish. Even at a higher burn rate..

Here is what I removed from the last 30 gallons of that really bad oil.

So(Jen) do you just use a spatula/squeegee thing to de-turd the bowl on the fuge?

LOL.. Cardboard.. The centrifuge is alum. (aka soft). So try to use something soft..

They sell paper liners which would be handy..

I did try one of the soft autobody squeegee things and the dirt and grit you could see marking up the bowl. So after that use cardboard.. Scoop and throw into furnace or into the burn pan.

I'm very excited about the new filter housing..

I ordered the plumbing parts today.. Those fittings are 2" so ordered 2] 2" ball valves, 1 elbow and 2] 2" to 3/4" bushings..

I run sprial cored pressure/vacuum hose.. Rated up to 72psi...

Ok, ok, ok..

I am hooked..

The new Tube sock filter is well how do I say it.. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was able to process a full 35 gallons of the grungy oil with no problems at all.

The oil flowed like fine nectar.. Filled up the feeder barrel in record time.

I removed the filter on the end of the pickup hose..

When I removed the top of the filter there were chunks in there.

I'm using the vacuum from the oil transfer pump to pull the oil thru the filter and pressure it to the centrifuge..

This is a huge game changer.. I can see using the tube filter as a water separator too..

Way cool.

Default Converting a fuel oil furnace to burn waste oil? Possible?

Nice. Please kept updates coming. Like how easy will it be to clean the sock filter. Or do you throw it away and just replace it? I hope not for the cost.

Some screen shots to have todays prices saved for your filter setup. Just to make me regret not buying this setup today, when I finally decide I should invest in this filter type five years from now.
