Thank you. The new fuel pump is welded, so no separate fittings, but the carb needs doing, and I got the fittings long ago. It all needs to come apart and get cleaned anyhow because it’s gummy from sitting for a year and a half, and the thing is loading up badly at idle right now.

My wife got a ride today, and shot this vid of me backing out.

I had to heat up an oil temp sender with propane today.

I thought it was broken, as the manual calls it a 100 ohm sender, and at 55F it was reading 16.4 K ohms. The gage checks OK, but the sender won't move it.

Anyhow, I was amazed at how fast the resistance dropped with heat applied.

I wet the sender and heated it until the water fizzeled away, so over 212F, and the resistance dropped to 100 ohms! . . . And lower, so I stopped heating and let it cool. It stopped at 10.47 k ohms.

I cooled it in the freezer and it rose to 20k at 5F. Then I took it out & it slowly dropped to 10.47 k. I cycled it again with the torch, and it did the same.

Never did it "stick" at 16.4 K again. At 55F it read 10.47 & I cycled it three times.

I reinstalled it and we will see what happens tomorrow. Too late to start the fun car tonight.

Be sure to check the ground on the gauge.

Thanks. Everything's freshly rewired.

The oil's not getting hot enough, I'll see something once I get the engine hot.

The thermostat and flappers are missing from this engine. It's $300 for all that stuff, plus I have to install it. I might find some used stuff cheap.

Well today is a wonderful day in California. And I’m not just talking about the lovely weather.

Please understand first that my interactions with traffic enforcement have historically been sort of one-sided. We were looking at each other’s red lights at the times in question.

But today, in spite of anything I could have imagined, a California highway patrol officer came to my house, to inspect my car, at my convenience, and it was a thoroughly wonderful experience.

The most thoroughly wonderful part was to find out that I was not in violation and I was going to get my tags and it wasn’t going to cost me another dime. Woo hoo!

Here’s something that people (especially those down under who suffer rigid inspection laws) will not understand. The automobile culture rises above every culture. Doesn’t matter what Land you are from. When you come here, you experience that.

We had a car inspection that was restricted to a photograph of my odometer and my serial number and a cursory visual inspection of the car. The officer took two minutes and it took five minutes for the officer to fill out paperwork.

We talked about the old Chevrolet he was working on with his boy, and his daughter’s desire to have a copy of Herbie the love bug.

He never asked me to start the car… he never looked underneath it…never asked if the brakes worked or asked me to turn the headlights on.

He admired my car so much that I actually wanted to demonstrate it, but he never asked. Just handed me the paperwork, and shook my hand, and said have a nice day.

The DMV is only 200 yards from my house by foot. 600 if I take the long way. Since I spent most of the morning cleaning up my filthy garage, I’m going to put that off one more hour.

Glad the vehicle inspection went well!

Thank you guys.

It went so well it almost didn’t happen at all. The most difficult part was the 30 minutes I spent beforehand sweeping out my dirty garage floor.

I stood in line at the DMV for a few minutes and got my license plates and now I am completely legal.

Of course now that I can legally drive it I want to tear it down completely and rebuild the whole framework.

Without getting too far into your business, what does the State of California charge for tags for a rig like that?

Please understand this was not a particularly expensive car And everything is usually based on what you pay for the car. This is the least amount of money I have spent on a car since 1988.

There is no particular fee for this as a special car. I paid the same taxes and registration as any other private (non-commercial use) car that cost $9000, which was the sales price.

But there were some penalties because I paid the fees 16 mos late.

It cost $1468 for tax, late payment penalties, various minor fees, and registration for two years. Over half of that total was the sales tax. About $789 as I recall.

I didn’t buy any special vanity plates or collector car plates from the state. They cost a bunch of money plus you pay an extra 50 bucks a year to keep them. It will cost about $100 a year for my license plates now.

Compare this to my 10 year old Toyota Tacoma pick up truck, for which I paid $299 this year. Because it is a truck I paid the commercial rate. Also the truck is worth over twice as much as the SS.
