At the end I was wondering how far out of balance it was.

For a compressor, that was the story, and compressors usually don't have counterweights. With a stroke like that it will probably run at 600 rpm.
It's impressive what you can do with sandals and a cutting torch. Maybe the dance that Turdo was doing on his embarrassing tour of India was invented by slag in a sandal.

That video is like how America was during the industrial era, when a lot of big equipment and railroads were made. Although I’m not sure that there was a lot of open toed sandels were worn. I was not there, so I don’t know for sure though.

Interesting to see these videos. At least they do have better video technology available today to capture the work.

Yes, I see no counter weights on the new crank.
Did you all see the donor crank had what looks like (provisions for) bolt on counterweights ?

Not uncommon for ships engines. A marine engineer I know was telling me about this 4 cylinder terribly maintained engine he rebuilt. The pistons were 48" and the 5th piston which was the supercharger was 8 ft diameter. Unknown to him, the cylinder head gasket had failed and the korean crew was disassembling the engine as it was dragged into port. After he rebuilt it, they started it up and beat feet out the harbour. Then there was a thud and the engine locked up.
When the 8 ft piston sucked in and hit the water in the head, the counterweight bolts sheared off and they were so jammed that the company had to air lance the weights apart to remove them.

Now we have folks who complain if they don’t have a cordless power tool to use.

I’m working in a lathe almost to the era of the guys in the video today. Fixing/ modifying a 5” diameter 12’ long chrome rod that the 3-1/2”/ 12tpi thread end broke off in the press it goes to.

Now I get to drill and thread a 4-1/2” deep hole to accept the 11” threaded stud I made for it. Click image for larger version

How much does your shop charge for the use of that lathe? Is there certain surcharges for certain PITA equipment?
