Default Solar Charger For Tractor

One of the last little details for the lawn tractor project was keeping it ready for action. We aren't like the Mid-west depending on how much rain we get the xeriscape here will probably only get mowed 3-4 times max. So, a means to keep the battery topped off is important. One I don't have to think about or remember is even better. I found a truly weather resistant(only warning was don't submerge it in water) solar trickle charger. I have it all set up and it's doing it's thing. But, I have a question for the "Brain Trust". If the panel is disconnected to mow does it need a load on it to keep things from being damaged? My thought is unused power is going to build heat and possibly cause circuit damage . I can set up a 12 volt bulb to act as a dummy load while the tractor is being used if need be. Could this be an issue or am I over thinking shit??

Tim, I think you are over thinking it. If you want to be sure, throw a bag over it. Without sunlight it can't attack, and is useless

If it was sold as trickle charger then it should not require a dummy load when disconnected.

If it was a home made deal then I would have suggested adding a diode so the battery does not back feed power on cloudy days.
I don't know if that would be an issue but something to research.

I would think if the output leads are not connected to anything it can not produce current, therefore, no heat.

I have a 15 watt panel and a charge controller that I use on the horse trailer when it is parked at shows for extended stays or we are camping. It keeps a deep cycle battery charged enough to use the interior lights. As it was not a dedicated charger I did have to add a plug in charge controller between the panel and the battery but I have not had any problems with it sitting out in the sun unplugged.
