Default Small Tire Changer

Been wanting to do this for 10 years. Had a bad tire on the boat trailer. 4.80x8. Got two new tires. Taking the tires off the wheel is always a pain as the wheel is so small.

Drilled and tapped a 1/2'13 a hole in my small outside welding table. Cut a piece of 3" pipe as a standoff from the table so the wheel/tire was above the table a few inches. Grabbed a 1/2-13 bolt and a few washers. Sat the tire/wheel on top off the pipe and used a piece of 2x5x1/2" plate with a hole drilled on center so the trie wheel is bolted down to the table. Much easier now to change tires.

I finally built one last summer, mine clamps in the vise, I had to three tires and after fighting the first one I figured it was time. Now people will be wondering what in the hell is that at the big sale when the time comes.

looks good and functional. And I am sure that tapped hole will find other uses too along the way.

Plan on having 3 rows of tapped holes some day on the welding table. Need to bring the mag drill out for that.

I need one more picture... with the wheel/tire mounted on your device. Is it just flat on the table bolted down ??

The wheel sits on the pipe standoff about 4" above the table. The bolt and plate on top of the wheel bolts the wheel to the pipe via the threaded hole in the table.

Chris, I had to find my glasses to figure out what the heck kind of axle you had on your boat trailer in pic #5.

It's all better now. lol

I bought one of the cheapy HF tire rigs a few years ago. Altered the base to where there are two pieces of sq tubing that sit in two each larger pieces of sq tubing which are set in the garage floor. I cut a hole out, made a footing for the tubing and set it in place.

When I need the tire changer, I open the floor tubing, set the rig in their pockets and have a solid foundation for working on tires.

I made a small adaptor which is used on the same rig for smaller rims etc, for my ZT etc. Those tires give me the most problems around here. You'd think I was in Texas with big assed thorns. But, there is nothing but magic to let air our of these pain in the butt tires.

Nice rigs guys. Well done.
