I didn't mean to imply only expensive meters have them. My Fieldpiece is about $135 or so, too. But it's not a common feature, but probably more common now than 10 years ago when I got that Ideal DVM. My Ideal clamp-ammeter doesn't do it either.

Lu47Dan, thank you for all your help on this.

The new capacitor is installed and the drill press is up and working just fine.

Just so folks know, Dan and I are [were] complete strangers to one another. He offered to go to his motor guy, get a capacitor and send it to me. It came today and I took a break from election coverage and went and replaced the bad capacitor with the one Dan sent.

It works properly now, but that isn't the story here- at least for me. Dan is the story- and the many Dans on many forums. I got a late start in knifemaking and blacksmithing and sheathmaking and building forges and manipulating hot steel.

I appreciate all the folks who share their experience and suggestions and critiques.

I also appreciate the Dans of this world- willing to go out of their way to help a stranger, just because they NEED help.

Thanks to all of you, and special thanks to you, Dan!

Dave

The new capacitor is also unmarked. Dan has worked with his motor guy a long time, and only needs to furnish the HP rating.
Maybe Dan will post contact info for the motor gy.

Again,
Thanks to you all!
Dave

Dave,
Glad to here you got it going. Never like to hear of a tool being trashed if it is repairable.

Way to go Dan!!

Mee tooo. Except when I find it at the scrap yard.

Good show, Dan. Did you ask the capacitor value?

Dave, you are welcome.
I am glad I could help and that it is working well.
The value of capacitor should be marked on the end flap of the box.
I do not remember the rating.
Dan.
