The truth is I did this in part for our viewers as I find nothing challenging or adventurous about making such a piece. I do however find the thought of buying another plastic replacement part disconcerting.

I thought it might prompt someone to do something similar who otherwise would not, had they not seen me do it. We all have various degrees of skill and resource. Sometimes all it takes is the right spark at the right time to get someone over their inhibition. It could be something simple like making a gasket punch from a piece of conduit. I'm trying to do my part to empower the people and save our world. It is becoming too easy to rely on corporations to supply us with our wants. I suppose I can't stop it but I might be able to slow it down a bit. I was just throwing out a spark.

There is probably a reason why the cams are plastic. If you think about it you will most likely come to the same conclusion.

A 3-D printer would have been handy to produce the cam, too.

Cost, is the reason most anything is made from plastic. Sure there is a benefit to the manufacturer but it's the consumer who is paying the price. Think about it when your plastic valve covers on your engine leak all over creation.

I despise plastic. I had a plastic oil pressure sensor separate on my truck a few years ago. Lucky for me I noticed it after I parked shortly after it happened. Had I been on the highway I would have likely needed a new engine. Just the other day I was chipping ice with a spade that had a plastic D-handle. The handle shattered on impact with the ice. These are just two examples where the "cost" of plastic could have been very high.

I suspect these printers are going to flood our lives with plastic to levels no one dreamed of a decade or so ago. It will be interesting to see the hidden cost of this convenience.
